Chouteau County is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. It is in the North-Central part of the state.
As of the census in 2020, there were 5,895 people living there.
Fort Benton is the county seat.
The county was created in 1865 as one of the first nine counties in Montana.
It was named after Pierre Chouteau Jr., a fur trader who started a trading post that later became Fort Benton, an important port on the Missouri River.
The Chippewa-Cree tribe lives in Chouteau County on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation.
Some of the Lewis and Clark National Forest is there.
The US Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 3,997 square miles (10,350 km2), of which 3,972 square miles (10,290 km2) are land and 24 square miles (62 km2) (0.6%) are water.
