It was named for the Chippewa, who were also called the Ojibwe, and ruled this land for a long time.
The 2020 census found that there were 66,297 people living there.
Chippewa Falls is the county seat.
The county was formed in 1853 from Crawford County, which was in the Wisconsin Territory at the time. It was created in 1845.
It is part of both the Eau Claire, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Eau Claire-Menomonie, WI Combined Statistical Area.
The county covers 1,041 square miles (2,700 km2), with 1,008 square miles (2,610 km2) of land and 33 square miles (85 km2) (3.2%) of water.
