Chippewa County (pronounced CHIH-p-wah) is a county in the eastern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

As of the 2020 Census, there were 36,785 people living there.

Sault Ste. Marie is the county seat.

The Ojibwe (Chippewa) people gave the county its name. It was set up and named in 1826.

The Sault Ste. Marie, MI micropolitan statistical area is made up of Chippewa County.

Chippewa County is one of the biggest in Michigan in terms of land area, and it has shores on both Lake Huron and Lake Superior.

It has an odd shape that is based on the Canadian border, which is based on the St. Marys River. Chippewa County has Drummond Island as a part of it.

The county has a total area of 2,698 square miles (6,990 km2), of which 1,558 square miles (4,040 km2) is land and 1,140 square miles (3,000 km2) (42%) is water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It has the second most land area in Michigan and the fifth most total area.
