Houston and Okolona are the county seats.
The Chickasaw people, who lived in this area for hundreds of years, gave the county its name.
Most were sent to Indian Territory against their will in the 1830s, but some stayed and became citizens of the state and the U.S.
The county has a total area of 504 square miles (1,310 km2), of which 502 square miles (1,300 km2) are land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
