Rusk is the county seat, located 130 miles southeast of Dallas and 160 miles north of Houston.
The county was named after the Cherokee, who lived in the area until they were expelled in 1839.
Cherokee County is included in the Jacksonville micropolitan statistical area, as well as the Tyler-Jacksonville combined statistical area.
