Cherokee County is a county in South Carolina, United States.
The population was 56,216 at the time of the 2020 census. Gaffney is the county seat.
York, Union, and Spartanburg Counties merged to form the county in 1897.
It was named after the Cherokee people, who lived in the area prior to European contact.
Cherokee County is part of the Gaffney, South Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 397 square miles (1,030 km2), of which 393 square miles (1,020 km2) is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is South Carolina’s third-smallest county in terms of land area and fourth-smallest in terms of total area.
