Roswell is the county seat.
Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves was a military leader in the area during the Civil War and later in Navajo campaigns. Chaves County was named after him.
The New Mexico Territorial Legislature made the county on February 25, 1889, by taking land from Lincoln County.
The Roswell, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Chaves County.
The county has a total area of 6,075 square miles (15,730 km2), of which 6,065 square miles (15,710 km2) are land and 9.8 square miles (25 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the fourth most land area of any county in New Mexico.
