Pittsboro is the county seat.
Chatham County is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area, which has a population of 2,043,867 as of the 2020 census.
The county has a total area of 710 square miles (1,800 km2), of which 682 square miles (1,770 km2) are land and 28 square miles (73 km2) (3.9%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
