Folkston serves as the county seat.

Trader’s Hill was the original county seat until 1901.
The county is named for Georgia Senator Robert Milledge Charlton.
The county has a total area of 782 square miles (2,030 km2), of which 774 square miles (2,000 km2) is land and 8.8 square miles (23 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is Georgia’s fifth-largest county in terms of land area. It is Georgia’s southernmost county.
The Okefenokee Swamp and its federally protected areas cover a substantial chunk of the county.
