It was named after Charles Eli Mix, a Bureau of Indian Affairs worker who helped get a peace treaty signed with the Lakota Indian tribes in the area.
The Yankton Indian Reservation takes up about 60% of the county’s eastern half.
The county covers a total area of 1,150 square miles (3,000 km2), of which 1,097 square miles (2,840 km2) are land and 53 square miles (140 km2) (4.6%) are water.
