Cedar County is a county in the state of Iowa in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 18,505 people living there.
Tipton is the county seat.
The Cedar River, which runs through the county, gave the county its name.
Cedar County is between the cities of Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, and Iowa City.
Together, these three cities make up the “Tri-Metro” area.
It is the only county in Iowa whose name comes from a tree. The Iowa Cow War of 1931 took place in Cedar County.
On December 21, 1837, parts of Dubuque County were taken to make Cedar County. The Cedar River gave it its name.
The city of Tipton, which is now the county seat, was built in 1840.
The county has a total area of 582 square miles (1,510 km2), of which 579 square miles (1,500 km2) are land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
