Carver County is named after Jonathan Carver, an explorer who went from Boston to the Minnesota River in 1766–1767 and spent the winter with the Sioux near where New Ulm is now.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Carver County.
The county covers 376 square miles (970 km2), 354 square miles (920 km2) of which are land and 22 square miles (57 km2) of which are water, or 5.8%.
It is the second smallest county in Minnesota in terms of land area and the third smallest in terms of total area.
