Carter County is in the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Huntington-Ashland, WV, KY, and OH. Carter Caves State Resort Park is there.
On February 9, 1838, parts of Greenup County and Lawrence County were taken to make Carter County.
It was named after a Kentucky state senator, Colonel William Grayson Carter.
The county seat is called Robert Grayson after his uncle.
In 1907, the first building was rebuilt.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 412 square miles (1,070 km2), of which 409 square miles (1,060 km2) are land and 2.6 square miles (6.7 km2) (0.6% of the total area) are water.
