Carroll County is a county in Virginia, located in the southwestern region of the state.
One-fifth of the county is in the Virginia Piedmont, while the rest is in the Appalachian Mountains.
Hillsville is the county seat and the major town.
The county was formed in 1842 from a portion of Grayson County and was named after Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Carroll County’s boundaries were eventually enlarged by incorporating area from Patrick County.
The county has a total area of 478 square miles (1,240 km2), of which 475 square miles (1,230 km2) is land and 3 square miles (7.8 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
