On January 2, 1833, the county was formed from a portion of Ray County and named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The county has a total area of 701 square miles (1,820 km2), of which 695 square miles (1,800 km2) is land and 6.8 square miles (18 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
