The county is named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the Declaration of Independence’s last surviving signatory.
Carroll County is located within the Greenwood Micropolitan Statistical Area.
It is part of the Mississippi Delta region, bounded on the west by the Yazoo River and on the east by the Big Black River.
The majority of its land is in hill country.
The county has a total area of 635 square miles (1,640 km2), of which 628 square miles (1,630 km2) is land and 6.3 square miles (16 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the Census Bureau.
