On January 15, 1851, parts of Pottawattamie County were taken away to make up Carroll County.
It was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland, who signed the Declaration of Independence and was the only Roman Catholic and longest-living person to do so.
The county has a total area of 570 square miles (1,500 km2), of which 569 square miles (1,470 km2) are land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
