Carroll County was made from Jo Daviess County in 1839. Charles Carroll, who signed the Declaration of Independence, is remembered by the name of the county.
Carroll was the last signer to die. He died in 1832.
The county has a total area of 466 square miles (1,210 km2), of which 445 square miles (1,150 km2) are land and 22 square miles (57 km2) (4.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
