Cape Girardeau County is in the southeast of the U.S. state of Missouri.
The Mississippi River runs along its eastern edge.
At the 2020 census, there were 81,710 people living there.
Jackson, the county seat, was the first US city to be named after President Andrew Jackson.
The county was made official on October 1, 1812. It was named after a French colonial official, Ensign Sieur Jean Baptiste de Girardot, who was in charge of the area at the time.
The word “cape” in the name of the county comes from a rock that used to stick out over the Mississippi River.
This rock was taken down when the railway was built.
Cape Girardeau County is the centre of the city of Cape Girardeau and the city of Jackson. Cape Girardeau is its biggest city.
The county has a total area of 586 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 579 square miles (1,500 km2) are land and 7.8 square miles (20 km2) (1.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
