The county was made in November 1822 and was named for Colonel Richard Callaway, who was one of the people who started Boonesborough.
The Murray, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Calloway County.
As of July 18, 2012, Calloway County is a wet county, which means that it is illegal to sell alcohol in the county, except in the city of Murray.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 411 square miles (1,060 km2), of which 385 square miles (1,000 km2) are land and 26 square miles (67 km2) are water, or 6.3%.
