Calhoun County is a county in South Carolina, United States.
It had a population of 14,119 people as of the 2020 census, making it the third-least populous county in the state.
St. Matthews is the county seat. It is also the state’s smallest county in terms of land area.
The county was formed in 1908 from portions of Lexington and Orangeburg counties and is located in a rural upland area long devoted to cotton plantations, part of the Black Belt of the South.
It is named after John C. Calhoun, a former United States vice president, Senator, Representative, and cabinet member from South Carolina, despite the fact that Calhoun was born in nearby Abbeville.
Calhoun County is included in the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 392 square miles (1,020 km2), of which 381 square miles (990 km2) is land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (2.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is South Carolina’s second-smallest county in terms of land area and total area.
