Calhoun County was founded on January 15, 1851, from open terrain that had previously been known as Fox County.
It was christened after the seventh US Vice President and separatist John C. Calhoun in 1853.
The county has a total area of 572 square miles (1,480 km2), of which 570 square miles (1,500 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
