Butler County is a county in the U.S. state of Missouri.
It is in the southeast part of the Ozark Foothills Region.
As of the 2020 Census, there were 42,130 people living in the county.
Poplar Bluff is the largest city and county seat.
The county was officially made out of Wayne County on February 27, 1849.
It is named after former U.S. Representative William O. Butler (D-Kentucky), who also ran for Vice President of the United States but lost.
On June 18, 1849, the first meeting was held in the Butler County Courthouse.
The Poplar Bluff, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Butler County.
The county has a total area of 699 square miles (1,810 km2), of which 695 square miles (1,800 km2) are land and 4.3 square miles (11 km2) (0.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
