Gann Valley, the county seat, has only 14 people, making it the least populated county seat in the United States.
The county was made in 1864 and set up in 1871. It was part of the Dakota Territory at the time.
In 2010, the most people lived in the eastern part of Buffalo County in South Dakota.
Most of Buffalo County is made up of the Crow Creek Indian Reservation, which is home to the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.
Crow Creek runs through the south and west of the county and into the river at the SW corner of the county. The county is 488 square miles (1,260 km2) in size, with 471 square miles (1,220 km2) of land and 16 square miles (41 km2) of water, or 3.4%.
