Georgetown is the county seat and the largest city.

The county was established in 1818 and is named after Major General Jacob Brown, a War of 1812 officer who was wounded at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane.

Brown County is included in the Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN Combined Statistical Area.

The county is 493 square miles (1,280 km2) in size, with 490 square miles (1,300 km2) being land and 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) (0.7%) being water.
