Hiawatha is the county center and largest city.
The Kickapoo Indian Reservation of Kansas, most of the Sac and Fox Reservation, and most of the Iowa Reservation of Kansas and Nebraska are all in Brown County.
The county has a total area of 572 square miles (1,480 km2), of which 571 square miles (1,480 km2) are land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The county is where the Wolf River starts. Brown State Fishing Lake, which used to be called “Brown County State Park,” is located in the county, 13 km east of Hiawatha.
