Brown County was founded in 1839 from Schuyler County.
It is named after General Jacob Brown of the United States, who beat the British at the Battle of Sackett’s Harbor in 1813.
The county has a total area of 307 square miles (800 km2), of which 306 square miles (790 km2) is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
