Brooks County is a county in Georgia, on the state’s southern border with Florida.
The population was 16,301 at the time of the 2020 census.
Quitman is the county seat.
The county was formed in 1858 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly and named after pro-slavery U.S. Representative Preston Brooks, who brutally beaten abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner with a cane for delivering a speech denouncing slavery.
Brooks County is part of the Valdosta, GA Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 498 square miles (1,290 km2), of which 493 square miles (1,280 km2) is land and 4.8 square miles (12 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The county’s eastern boundary is formed by the Little River (Withlacoochee River) and the Withlacoochee River, which meander together for more than 100 miles (160 km).
