The county was established in 1862 and incorporated in 1871.
Brookings County is part of the Brookings, South Dakota Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county was named after Wilmot Wood Brookings (1830-1905), a politician and pioneer of southeastern South Dakota, and was established on July 3, 1871.
Medary served as the county seat from 1871 to 1879, when it was relocated to Brookings.
The county terrain is characterized by sloped flatlands and numerous lakes and ponds, particularly in the western part.
The land is mostly used for agriculture.
The county covers an area of 805 square miles (2,080 km2), 782 square miles (2,030 km2) of which is land and 13 square miles (34 km2) (1.6%) is water.
