Brooke County is a county in the northern part of West Virginia’s Panhandle.
As of the census in 2020, there were 22,559 people living there.
Wellsburg is the county seat.
The county was made in 1797 from a part of Ohio County.
It was named after Robert Brooke, who was governor of Virginia from 1794 to 1796.
Brooke County is part of the Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton, PA-WV-OH Combined Statistical Area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 93 square miles (240 km2), of which 89 square miles (230 km2) are land and 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) (3.6% of the total area) are water.
It has the second-smallest land size of any county in West Virginia. Brooke County’s highest point is about 1372 feet above sea level and is about 1.5 miles south of Franklin.
