The town of Hardinsburg, Kentucky, is the county seat.
The county was named after John Breckinridge, who lived from 1760 to 1806. He was the attorney general of Kentucky, a state politician, a U.S. senator, and the attorney general of the U.S.
It was the 38th county to be made in the state of Kentucky.
After a local choice vote on January 29, 2013, Breckinridge County is now a “wet” county. Before that, it had been a “dry” county for 105 years.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 586 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 567 square miles (1,470 km2) are land and 18 square miles (47 km2) are water, or 3.2%.
