Braxton County is located in the state of West Virginia’s middle region.
The population was 12,447 at the time of the 2020 census.
Sutton is the county seat.
Carter Braxton, a Virginia statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was named for the county, which was founded in 1836 from sections of Lewis, Kanawha, and Nicholas counties.
The county has a total area of 516 square miles (1,340 km2), of which 511 square miles (1,320 km2) is land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
