Nahunta is the county seat.
Brantley County is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Brunswick, Georgia.
On November 2, 1920, the people of Georgia changed the state constitution to make Brantley County out of parts of Charlton, Pierce, and Wayne counties.
Even though no one knows for sure where the name of the county came from, it is thought that it was named after U.S. congressman William Gordon Brantley.
The county has a total area of 447 square miles (1,160 km2), of which 442 square miles (1,140 km2) are land and 4.8 square miles (12 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
