Danville serves as the county seat.
The county was established in 1842 and named for John Boyle (1774-1835), a U.S. Representative, chief justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and eventually federal judge for the District of Kentucky.
It is included in the Danville, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 183 square miles (470 km2), of which 180 square miles (470 km2) is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (1.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
