As of the census in 2020, there were 48,261 people living there.
The county seat is Catlettsburg, and Ashland is the biggest city.
In 1860, the county was made. Its 160 square miles (410 km2) are near the Ohio River and Big Sandy River in the northeastern part of the state.
It is set in the green rolling hills of Appalachia. Boyd County is in the metropolitan statistical area of Huntington-Ashland, WV, KY, and OH.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 162 square miles (420 km2), of which only 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2) (1.3% of the total area) are covered by water.
