Hailey is the county seat and the major city.
It is also home to the Sun Valley ski resort, which is located near Ketchum.
Blaine County was formed by joining Alturas and Logan counties on March 5, 1895, and was named after former congressman and Republican presidential nominee James G. Blaine.
Its current boundaries were established on February 8, 1917, when a western portion was divided to form Camas County.

The county has a total area of 2,661 square miles (6,890 km2), of which 2,644 square miles (6,850 km2) is land and 17 square miles (44 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
