Black Hawk County is located in the northeastern region of the United States state of Iowa.
The population was 131,144 as of the 2020 census, making it Iowa’s fifth-most populous county. Waterloo serves as the county seat.
Black Hawk County is included in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls, IA Combined Statistical Area.
On February 17, 1853, areas of Buchanan County were combined to form Black Hawk County.
It was named after Black Hawk, a Sauk chief during the Black Hawk War of 1832.
The county has a total area of 573 square miles (1,480 km2), of which 566 square miles (1,470 km2) is land and 6.9 square miles (18 km2) (1.2%) is water.
From northwest to southeast, the Cedar River divides the county roughly in half. Because much of the land is on the river’s flood plain, it is mostly level.
