Ortonville is the county seat.
In 1862, the county was made, and in 1874, it was set up.
The western part of Minnesota is where Big Stone County is. Its southwest border is right next to the east border of South Dakota.
Along the southwest edge of the county, the Little Minnesota River flows. Since 1937, the water from the river has been held back by the Big Stone Lake Dam, making Big Stone Lake.
