The population was 18,160 at the time of the 2020 census.
Nashville is the county seat.
The county was formed by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on February 25, 1856, from pieces of Coffee, Irwin, and Lowndes Counties.
It bears the name of Georgia Senator John M. Berrien.
The county has a total area of 458 square miles (1,190 km2), of which 452 square miles (1,170 km2) is land and 6.0 square miles (16 km2) (1.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
