Minnewaukan is the county seat.
The Dakota Territory legislature established the county on March 9, 1883, and named it after Bertil W. Benson, a Dakota Territory legislator at the time.
On June 4, 1884, the county government was established, and its boundaries were altered by two legislative actions in 1885.
The county is 1,439 square miles (3,730 km2) in size, with 1,389 square miles (3,600 km2) of land and 51 square miles (130 km2) (3.5%) of water.
