Benewah County is a county in the northwest corner of the United States state of Idaho.
The county had a population of 9,530 as of the 2020 United States Census.
St. Maries, the county seat and main city, is located within the Coeur d’Alene Reservation.
On January 23, 1915, the county was formed from land partitioned from Kootenai County. It was named after a Coeur d’Alene Tribal chief.
The federally recognized Coeur d’Alene Tribe is based in this and neighboring Kootenai County on the Coeur d’Alene Reservation.
Benewah County is located on the state’s western border. Its western boundary line abuts the state of Washington’s eastern boundary line. The county covers 784 square miles (2,030 km2), of which 777 square miles (2,010 km2) are land and 7.3 square miles (19 km2) (0.9%) are water.
It is located in the northern Palouse, a broad and rolling prairie-like terrain of the middle Columbia basin.
