Bedford County is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia located in the Piedmont region.
Bedford, the county capital, was an autonomous city from 1968 until it rejoined the county in 2013.
Bedford County was formed in 1753 from sections of Lunenburg County, with various boundary revisions occurring until the current limits were set in 1786.
The county was named after John Russell, the fourth Duke of Bedford and an English statesman.
Bedford County is included in the Lynchburg Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 769 square miles (1,990 km2), of which 753 square miles (1,950 km2) is land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (2.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
