Bedford County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 50,237 people living there.
Shelbyville is the county seat.
Bedford County is part of both the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro, TN Combined Statistical Area and the Shelbyville, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area.
In 1807, the people of Rutherford County who lived south of the Duck River and the Stones River asked the governor to split Rutherford County in two.
The governor agreed. The new county was named for Thomas Bedford, an officer in the American Revolutionary War who owned a lot of land in the area.
Bedford County was once the largest and most populous county in the state. Since 1809, Coffee County, Moore County, Lincoln County, and Marshall County have been formed from parts of Bedford County.
