Beaver is the county seat and the major city.
The county was called after the abundant beaver population in the area.
The terrain slopes west and north; the highest point is a mountain crest on the east border, at 12,011 feet (3,661 metres) above sea level.
The county covers 2,592 square miles (6,710 km2), of which 2,590 square miles (6,700 km2) are land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.08%) are water.
