Butler is the county seat.
The county was established in 1841 and named after Frederick Bates, Missouri’s second governor.
The county has a total area of 851 square miles (2,200 km2), of which 837 square miles (2,170 km2) is land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (1.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
