Barrow County is a county in the U.S. state of Georgia.
It is in the north central part of the state.
As of the 2020 Census, there were 83,505 people living there.
Winder is the county seat.
The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area has Barrow County as a part of it.
On November 3, 1914, Georgia voters approved a change to the state constitution that made Barrow County out of parts of Gwinnett, Jackson, and Walton counties.
This made Barrow County the 149th of Georgia’s 159 counties.
Barrow County was named after David Crenshaw Barrow, Jr., who taught math and engineering at the University of Georgia and later became Chancellor, a job he held from 1906 to 1925.
Barrow died in Athens on January 11, 1929, and is buried in the Oconee Hill Cemetery there.
The county has a total area of 163 square miles (420 km2), of which 160 square miles (410 km2) are land and 2.6 square miles (6.7 km2) (1.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The whole of Barrow County is in the Altamaha River basin’s Upper Oconee River sub-basin.
