Aurora County is a county in South Dakota, United States.
The population was 2,747 at the time of the 2020 census.
The county was established in 1879 and incorporated in 1881.
On October 1, 1879, the Dakota Territory established Aurora County, named after Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn.
It was established on August 29, 1881, with the appointment of three county commissioners.
Aurora County’s terrain is made up of low rolling hills that are partially used for agriculture. Small lakes and ponds dot the landscape.
The upper west boundary line is the highest point, and the terrain slopes east-northeastward; the lowest point is the county’s northeast corner at 1,325 feet (404 meters) ASL.
The county covers 713 square miles (1,850 km2), of which 708 square miles (1,830 km2) are land and 4.3 square miles (11 km2) (0.6%) are water.
