Mexico is the county seat.
The county was made on December 13, 1836. It was named for Colonel James Hunter Audrain, who fought in the War of 1812 and was later elected to the state legislature.
The US Census Bureau says that the county is 697 square miles (1,810 km2) in size, with 692 square miles (1,790 km2) of land and 4.6 square miles (12 km2) of water (0.7%).
