Kosciusko is the county seat.
Attala County is named after Atala, a fictional Native American heroine from François-René de Chateaubriand’s novel of the same name published in the early nineteenth century.
The county has a total area of 737 square miles (1,910 km2), of which 735 square miles (1,900 km2) is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is bounded on the west by the Big Black River, a tributary of the Mississippi River.
