Atchison County is the farthest northwestern county in Missouri.
The county had a population of 5,305 as of the 2020 census.
Rock Port is the county seat.
When it was separated from Holt County in 1843, it was known as Allen County.
On February 14, 1845, the county was formally established and named after Missouri U.S. Senator David Rice Atchison.
The county has a total area of 550 square miles (1,400 km2), of which 547 square miles (1,420 km2) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
